A Tale of Two Paradigms: Why the West Must Join China's Belt and Road Initiative

October 20—The Nineteenth Congress of the Chinese Communist Party opened on October 18 with a powerfully optimistic speech by President Xi Jinping, in which he presented a bold strategy for the continued advance of China's economy, as a contribution toward realizing "the common destiny for mankind and enduring peace and stability."  Xi outlined how China would build on its extraordinary progress in reducing poverty, saying that by 2020, poverty will be completely eliminated, and by 2035, the nation will be fully modernized.  While the driver for this is the extension of the "New Silk Road" into a global landbridge, centered on the Belt and Road initiative (BRI), Xi spoke of the thinking behind it, which includes promoting the "spirit of science" and classical culture, to make China an "innovation society."

October 12—In the last year, since the Brexit vote in the U.K. and the election of Donald Trump in the U.S., there has been a growing awareness that the population in the Trans-Atlantic world is being subjected to a dangerous phenomenon known as "Fake News."  The distrust of all elites, including those who determine what is covered in newspapers and by the talking heads on television, is part of the dynamic of insurgency which is sweeping the west, and is manifest in the anti-establishment voting patterns, which are overturning "politics-as-usual."

Wall Street Quakes as Trump Calls for Wiping Out Debt of Puerto Rico

October 10—While the U.S. media continues its nonstop Trump-bashing, now accusing the President of ignoring the suffering of Puerto Ricans hit by Hurricane Maria, the President lobbed a bombshell in an interview that left Wall Street shaken, and the mainstream media temporarily speechless.  Following his visit to the island devastated by the storm,Trump told FOX News correspondent Geraldo Rivera that he wants to "wipe out" Puerto Rico's debt, which now stands at approximately $74 billion.
